Apprentices facing redundancy could get 'off-the-job training'

1 min read Education
The government is considering offering a new support package to apprentices who are facing redundancy, CYP Now has learned.

The package, which is being put together because of the economic downturn, could see apprentices offered so-called off-the-job training if they are made redundant.

A spokesman for the Association of Learning Providers told CYP Now that apprentices who are made redundant with six months or less of their placement to go could be allowed to finish their apprenticeship with a training provider.

This is despite the fact that traditional apprenticeships must be completed while the trainee is in employment.

Meanwhile, the government has today pledged to offer 21,000 new public sector apprenticeship places from April.

The announcement marks the start of National Apprenticeship Week and is designed to help the government meet its target of creating 35,000 new apprenticeships.
