Antisocial behaviour: Southwark holds motorbike event

Youth Work
Southwark Council has held an awareness event to deter young people from riding mini-motos and mopeds illegally.

Southwark Youth Offending Team held the Mad about Mopeds event at Burgess Park on 21 and 22 August in conjunction with other agencies. It gave 14- to 17-year-olds the opportunity to ride a moped in a designated area, learn about control and safety and find out about the laws governing motorbikes.

The initiative follows a rise in complaints to the police about the illegal riding of petrol-powered bikes.

Councillor Paul Kyriacou, executive member for community safety at the council, said: "Often adults and young people are unaware of the law and terms of use of mini-motos and similar vehicles. They are not intended for highway use and should never be ridden on roads or in public areas."
