Anti-racism: Oldham to change St George's image

1 min read
An Oldham anti-racist group hopes to challenge perceptions of the flag of St George in the build-up to the patron saint's day this week.

The PeaceMaker group is offering a three-pronged programme of events in 25 of the town's primary schools. Tell it! like it is will offer storytelling, drama and art to 30 year-five pupils in each school.

St George's day is on Friday (23 April) and PeaceMaker project officer Carolyn Eaton said there would be a "BNP presence" in the Lancashire town, which was hit by riots three years ago.

"We want children to connect something positive to the day, not just racial tension," she added. "We have noticed that a lot of children and young people don't have a sense of being British and don't know about the story behind St George."
