Anger over 16-19 funds fiasco

1 min read Education
Two of the most senior figures in local authority children's services have written to Children's Secretary Ed Balls to voice "deep concerns" about the 100m funding shortfall resulting from the Learning and Skills Council's (LSC) handling of cash allocations to schools and colleges for 2009/10.

Les Lawrence, chair of the Local Government Association's children and young people board, and Kim Bromley-Derry, president of the Association of Directors of Children's Services, have told Balls that present allocations are "inadequate to meet young people's needs".

Last week, the LSC apologised for misleading schools and colleges over the amount of funding they would receive for 2009/10. The revised allocations have resulted in a funding gap of around £100m, raising fears that teenagers could be turned away from institutions later this year.

In their letter, seen by CYP Now, Lawrence and Bromley-Derry say they are concerned about how the allocation process was handled.
