Your youth service could soon be up for sale. That seems to be the message from the unions after the Government revealed plans to increase competition for the provision of children and young people's services (YPN, 10-16 March, p2).
Both Unison and the Community and Youth Workers' Union (CWYU) poured scorn on the idea, floated in the Every Child Matters: Next Steps document published alongside the children bill.
Colin Meech, Unison's national officer for youth work, says: "I don't believe the private sector has brought that many benefits where it has taken over public services, so I would rather see youth service delivery brought in-house."
