
The arts allow many young people to find their true expression, claims Doug Nicholls, general secretary of the Community and Youth Workers' Union. "So it is worse than ironic to see this area of excellence so threatened," he says.
In Arts Council England's shake-up a fortnight ago, it stopped funding for 185 organisations including some youth arts groups. The cuts come hot on the heels of a warning from culture minister Margaret Hodge that funding for youth arts is set to worsen (CYP Now, 5-11 December 2007).
When asked at a youth arts conference whether funding would be extended beyond the current three-year period, she said: "It's going to get worse, not better, if you look at where the economy is going over the medium term."
