The Scottish Executive's first ever strategy for tackling the problem of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET), which was launched last week (YPN, 14-20 June, p2), could be seen as a little behind the times.
In England the Government set up the Connexions service in 2001 to deal with the same problem, and has introduced other measures such as education maintenance allowances, and the ill-fated Connexions Card, which is set to close next year (YPN, 14-20 June, p2).
But the delay in Scotland could allow the country to avoid the teething problems experienced by the Connexions service. A spokesman for the Executive says it has taken a look at progress south of the border in drawing up the More Choices, More Chances action plan.
