ANALYSIS: Mental Health

It has long been recognised by practitioners and service users that the provision of mental health services for adolescents is inadequate. Teenagers with mental health issues have fallen between the two stools of provision for young children and adult services, neither of which adequately met their needs (YPN 5-11 March, p12).

But this could be about to change for the better, due in part to continuing awareness-raising prompted by charities and pressure groups such as Youth Access, YoungMinds and Mind Out for Mental Health. The Government also recently outlined an NHS strategy for children and young people that acknowledged specific issues facing adolescents (YPN 30 April-6 May, p9).
