As a name, the Priory is probably best known as a retreat for celebrities and rock stars whose lives are in various states of meltdown. But in 2004, two in five of the group's acute psychiatric patients were publicly funded, many through contracts with primary care trusts. The new service will accept referrals from GPs, consultant psychiatrists, child and adolescent mental health services, drug and alcohol services, adult psychiatry services, psychotherapists and self-referrals.
The range of agencies referring patients underlines the fact that mental health isn't something that can be treated in isolation. It impinges on all parts of young people's lives and is a particular factor in areas such as youth offending, drug use, homelessness, looked-after children and refugees.
