Analysis: Local elections - Parties pin their hopes on children

3 mins read
Children have come to the political fore yet again as the local elections loom, but although the parties agree that early years services and childcare are important issues, there are disagreements over delivery and funding. David Singleton reports.

Chancellor Gordon Brown has predicted that Labour will win next month'slocal elections on the basis of increased investment in children'sservices.

"We believe in developing, not just some of the potential of some of ourchildren, but all of the potential of all of our children. And thesewill be the issues on which we will win the local elections," he told aselect audience at the campaign launch in London's Docklands earlierthis month.

Certainly the Labour Party will be hoping voters are not thinking aboutIraq and cash for peerages when they go to the polls on 4 May. Rather, they want local people to recognise the extra services being offered bytheir schools and the impact that Sure Start centres have had in theircommunities.
