Analysis: Housing - The bleak consequences of living in unfithousing

Shelter has cast the homelessness net wider than ever with the launch of its Million Children campaign, which highlights the plight of the million young people in inadequate accommodation (YPN, 21-27 April, p6).

The word "homeless" was used only once in the campaign launch press release while the more catch-all "housing" appeared 12 times. Health and education, rather than roofs and rough sleepers, are the campaign watch words.

The report, Toying with their future, is full of statistics emphasising the social consequences of living in overcrowded or unfit housing, such as the fact that young people living in homes with damp are twice as likely to develop asthma.
