Housing: The missing link?

The Children Act 2004 has forced many services to work more closely together. But despite the impact of poor housing, there is still no duty on providers to support outcomes for children. Ben Cook discovers what is being done about this.

There's also been blokes shouting at my teenagedaughter and hanging around outside asking for her phone number."Welcome to a day in the life of Michelle, a 35-year-old mother of three,who lives with her children in temporary accommodation after fleeingfrom her violent partner.

Their home, a three-bedroom flat in Camberwell, London, is in a sorrystate. As well as being overrun with mice, it's also infested withcockroaches.

The boiler broke down shortly before Christmas leaving Michelle and herchildren without hot water or heating. The children were unable toshower and so didn't go to school.
