Analysis: Gambling - Government puts prevention first

"All I remember the first time I went into an arcade were the lights and sounds coming from the machines. It was so exciting, unlike anywhere I'd ever been before - and I knew I had to go back there again."

These are the words of a man who sought help from gambling charity GamCare for his compulsion, which began when he was 14.

He ended up stealing and borrowing from family, friends and work to stay in the arcade for as long as possible: "No-one had a clue I was destroying my life."

Problem on the increase

According to the Government, the UK has a low rate of problem gambling, but that view is not shared by everyone.
