Analysis: Funding - Charity projects put in jeopardy

The CareZone web site for professionals and children in care is to close after missing its revenue targets. But the charity running it has blamed structural upheaval and short-term funding, a problem facing many voluntary sector projects . Asha Goveas reports.

When the green paper on looked-after children finally arrives thisautumn, local authority CareZone users will be shaking their heads.

Trust, CareZone addresses urgent priorities the paper is expected totackle, from placement stability to poor educational results. Yetdespite the Government pledging its commitment to using the third sectorto deliver children's services, the site is to be scrapped (ChildrenNow, 2-15 August).

"It's a safe and state-of-the-art way for children, carers and otherprofessionals to communicate," says Peter Riddle, assistant head ofservice, children and families at Derbyshire County Council. "But it'sthe sort of thing a local authority on their own couldn't possiblyafford to develop."
