"There is a fundamental cultural shift under way in youth work right now to ensure disabled young people are included in mainstream services," says Steve Richardson, disability consultant at Richardson Training Consultancy.
His company has been working with a number of youth services in the eastern region to help them meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and the Special Education and Disability Act 2001.
"There is a need to move away from specialist provision to include disabled young people in existing services."
Deadline approaching
The Disability Discrimination Act requires all publicly funded services to become compliant in terms of access and inclusion by 1 October 2004.
