All councils need to support refugee children in this crisis

No one can fail to have been moved by reports over the summer of the suffering experienced by migrants and refugees - those seeking work or better living conditions and those fleeing war or persecution. The recent sea change in awareness of and attitudes to refugees is welcome.

As I write, the government has announced that the UK will take in nearly 20,000 Syrians over five years. I very much hope that the improved perception of refugees is mirrored by changes in the way we see migrants. Whether you believe that the UK should be more or less welcoming to economic migrants, I for one am keen that the British government, alongside neighbours in Europe, finds a humane solution that does not result in another summer of people, and in particular, children, suffocating in trucks in Hungary, camping out in Calais and in some cases, paying with their lives, while attempting to journey across the channel to the UK.
