The refugee crisis needs a collective council response

A report by MPs published this month called for the government to take an extra 3,000 child refugees from Syria currently stranded in makeshift camps in mainland Europe.

The recommendation from the international development select committee backed calls from charity Save the Children for the UK to offer sanctuary to more child refugees on top of the current government commitment to accept 20,000 Syrians of all ages by 2020.

Save the Children has raised concerns about the safety of thousands of children who have made the perilous migration from the war zones of the Middle East on their own, with urgent action needed to ensure they do not fall prey to child traffickers, drugs gangs and the prostitution industry.

Association of Directors of Children's Services president Alison O'Sullivan also backs calls for the UK to offer more support for child refugees. While acknowledging there are practical implications to accommodating more unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, she says there is "willingness" from councils to help.
