The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has confirmed that the monitoring of information, advice and guidance is to be absorbed into the performance management system outlined in the local government white paper (YPN, 1-7 November, p5). This will be introduced in 2009. The Audit Commission will lead risk assessments that will trigger wider inspections if risks are noted.
The Government is developing an early warning performance management process for IAG, based on a "traffic light" system determining the degree of urgency with which follow-up action is needed. Standards will also be monitored through regular meetings between central government and council chief executives, to pick up on any risk factors.
