Among the other major attractions it boasts is the National Railway Museum, which this summer is running activities on the theme of the book The Railway Children. Young people can dress up in Edwardian costume and have their pictures taken next to old-fashioned train carriages, and make their own model railway based on the novel.
Castle Howard, which featured in the TV drama Brideshead Revisited, is also running activities for young people over the summer, including a daily adventure trail that helps bring alive the history of the famous castle.
For youth groups that want to delve even further back into history, then there's the York Viking Walk. York was the capital of Viking England in the late 9th and early 10th centuries and the walk takes in the venues where many of the bloodiest battles took place.
