Academy heads 'should be moral'

Education
Academy heads need different qualities to conventional school leaders, according to research commissioned by The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.

The University of Hull research found although all head teachers need similar skills, those running academies face unique challenges. In particular, academy heads must be entrepreneurial and innovative to manage relationships with sponsors, the report said.

The research also claims that academy head teachers need to be especially moral and passionate, with a unique ability to work under the media and political spotlight.

John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: "Every headship brings with it a different set of challenges and issues. All heads need passion, moral purpose and focus to enable a school to continuously improve. Increasingly, heads are fulfilling an even wider moral purpose by working together and sharing responsibility for the educational progress of all children within a locality."
