Academic Attainment: GCSE results show improvements

Government figures show an improvement in the number of A* to C grade GCSE passes since last year for pupils with special educational needs, those who take free school meals, those whose first language is not English and those from ethnic minority backgrounds.

The percentage of children with a special educational needs statementgaining five good passes increased from 7.1 per cent in 2005 to 8.5 percent in 2006.

In total, 47.9 per cent of Black pupils achieved five A* to C passescompared with 57.2 per cent of White pupils and 60.9 per cent of Asianpupils.
