A joint DCSF and DFID Global Learning Strategy for Schools

1 min read Education
To promote awareness of world issues, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the Department for International Development (DFID) have developed a joint global learning strategy for schools.

The draft strategy is underpinned by the departments' shared vision of empowering all children and young people to understand their role as global citizens. All maintained schools in England have a duty to teach and promote community cohesion, and the Global Learning Strategy is designed to contribute to this duty. Today's children and young people are living in an increasingly global society, so it's imperative that they understand and appreciate others from different backgrounds and have a sense of shared values at both a local and global level.

The draft strategy comes after a review of DCSF and DFID-funded programmes showed that although progress has been made in teaching global issues, a more aligned approach could further improve learning. The proposal includes a new programme of support for schools; a global website; a new communication and evaluation strategy; and a new governance structure.
