A Carbon Management Strategy for Schools

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) is seeking views on plans to reduce harmful carbon and greenhouse gases emitted from schools.

The school sector is responsible for 15 per cent of the public sector's carbon emissions, through school travel and transport, energy use in school buildings and waste production.

The consultation will focus on how to reduce carbon emissions but will not at this stage consider detailed costs or the wider impact of any policies that might be identified. It will include proposals on how suppliers of products and services to schools can also help to reduce emissions. The consultation is underpinned by the government's ambition to reduce the UK's greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050. The results of this consultation will be published by the DCSF in early 2010.
