The shocking arrests of children as young as 12 linked to racist riots in recent weeks has raised questions over how best to support young people both involved in and affected by the disorder.

Online videos appear to show adults involved in the disturbances encouraging children to take part while experts warn that social media is increasing young people’s risk of becoming caught up in crime, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds and with special educational needs and disabilities.

Elsewhere, experts warn of an increase in the radicalisation of children online, with Avon and Somerset Police reporting a 21% rise in the work of a specialist team set up to tackle the targeting of children by gangs online in 2023 (analysis p12).
