The Youth Justice Board (YJB) is looking into “alternatives to prosecution” for children involved in violent disorder across the country in a bid to prevent reoffending, the organisation’s chair had said.

A number of children, including two 12-year-old boys and a 13-year-old girl, have appeared in court this week over riots which broke out across the country earlier this month (August).

YJB chair Keith Fraser said the organisation “condemns the violent disorder”.

“It is a sad reality that children will have been involved in the disorder and will now be facing the consequences.

“While the seriousness of the conduct of some children will mean that prosecution will be necessary, where appropriate, we support alternative ways of holding children to account that will enable them to pay back to the local community and reduce their likelihood of offending in future,” he added.
