Every few weeks or so, politicians and the media take our society some more steps down the path to self-destruction. Whether it's the reimprisonment of James Bulger's child killer Jon Venables, or more recently the alleged manslaughter of 64-year-old David Askew by young people who are said to have "tormented" him to death, the tough talk prevails. The tabloids pander to the lowest common denominator of rage against "evil" towards the perpetrators of wrongdoing. They fuel the politics of fear and vilification, and politicians are only too ready to oblige in a bidding war on who will be toughest on crime. Or at the bare minimum to restate relentlessly that public confidence is what is paramount, as justice minister Maria Eagle does in this week's interview.
