Essex scheme focuses on tackling causes of drug-related crime

A service to reduce drug-related crime by ensuring offenders receive continuous care between prison and the community is being launched in Essex.

The Essex Drug & Alcohol Partnership has commissioned the charity Westminster Drug Project to deliver the initiative, called the Criminal Justice Interventions Service.

The new programme will deliver targeted interventions for drug-related offenders from the age of 16 at Chelmsford young offender institution, as well as across the adult secure estate. It will ensure a wider range of support and supervision for offenders, meaning the right services can be provided throughout the justice system.

Donia Slyzuk, strategic manager at Essex Drug & Alcohol Action Team, said: "This new approach to delivery has the potential to inform national standards and guidelines from 2012 onwards.
