Secure estate told to improve drug misuse services

Secure establishments holding under 18s in custody have been told to improve substance misuse services as part of a drive to prevent young offenders becoming drug dependent.

A joint letter from the Department of Health, Ministry of Justice and Youth Justice Board, reveals that funding allocations provided to each establishment for substance misuse services are at least the same level as last year.

It adds that local partnerships delivering services are “encouraged” to carry out a review of services so they can provide an “immediate response” to young people's needs, including clinical support to manage withdrawal.

The letter reveals that the main focus of all establishments should be to prevent young people's drug habits from worsening.

“For the young people’s secure estate, the emphasis should be on preventing any escalation of drug/alcohol related risk, avoiding progression to adult dependency,” it states.
