Labour must admit that it failed on youth reoffending during its tenure in government, according to new MP Rushanara Ali who added that her party was tough on crime but "not tough enough on the causes".

Addressing a meeting held by the Transition to Adulthood (T2A) alliance, the MP for Bethnal Green and Bow said that Labour now had to think radically about what its policies should be having learnt from both the successes and failures of the past.

"I do passionately believe that although the intentions were there and many efforts were made to try to ensure that the Labour government supported young people who ended up in the criminal justice system to reintegrate, we largely failed to address the major problem of reoffending," Ali said. "The mantra of tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime was a brilliant one, but the problem was we ended up being tough on crime but not tough enough on the causes."
