The 21 projects that will receive support from the £9.25m Empowerment Fund were announced by Communities Secretary Hazel Blears.
Among the recipients is research and social innovation organisation the Young Foundation which has received a grant of £500,000 over three years. Part of the money will be spent on a leadership programme to help young people become civic leaders in marginalised communities. The Uprising Leadership Programme aims to create a pool of young leaders who can "take up positions of power in public institutions"
The YWCA has also received a three year £500,000 strategic grant from the fund. A YWCA spokesman said: "We will use the funding to empower young women from disadvantaged backgrounds and develop their skills, knowledge and confident to participate in influencing and decision-making forums. It will also be used to roll out models of best practice so other young women can get involved in public voice and influencing forums."
