Youth justice roundup: PCC elections, death inquiry and ADHD

Voters hit the polling stations to elect their next police and crime commissioners; an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 16-year-old boy begins; and a charity calls for prison officers at young offenders' centres in Northern Ireland to receive mandatory ADHD training, all in the news this week.

Voters in England and Wales will choose their police and crime commissioners (PCCs) in local elections today. According to the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, voters in 41 police force areas, excluding London, will hit the polling stations to elect a PCC.


An independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 16-year-old boy at his Aberdeen school is to begin. The BBC reports Bailey Gwynne was stabbed by a fellow pupil at Cults Academy in October. The review will look at the relationship between Bailey and his killer, as well as the educational, pastoral, health and social care services provided.?


A charity has called for prison officers at young offender centres in Northern Ireland to receive mandatory training to help spot and understand attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Belfast Telegraph reports the call by ADD-NI comes after the charity said at least 70 per cent of young people in Hydebank Young Offenders Unit have the behavioural disorder.?


Young people in south Buckinghamshire are to get a taste of life as a police officer. The Bucks Free Press reports the Thames Valley Police Cadets scheme will provide 13- to 18-year-olds in the Chiltern and south Buckinghamshire local police area, with an opportunity to develop their skills and qualities through a structured programme.


Children as young as eight are becoming involved in antisocial behaviour in a Derbyshire town. The Derby Telegraph reports that police say the attraction of the “gang mentality” is leading to young people taking part in petty criminal damage and distressing residents in part of Ilkeston. ?
