Sussex PCC launches youth commission

A youth commission is to be established in Sussex by the county's police and crime commissioner (PCC).

Young people aged between 14 and 25 years old will form the commission and work closely with Sussex PCC Katy Bourne.

They will represent the views of their peers, challenge Bourne’s policies and help tackle crimes often associated with young people such as antisocial behaviour and alcohol abuse.

The launch of the commission, which is being set up in partnership with the SHM Foundation, marks the first anniversary of the election of PCCs, who were voted in to their roles in November last year.

Bourne has already worked with several youth organisations and is keen to ensure that young people’s voices are heard.

She said: “The youth commission will provide a platform for young people to support, inform and challenge me on the Police and Crime Plan.

“My policies will undoubtedly have a major impact on young people – whether that’s through their experience of the police or how safe they feel in their community.

“It’s important to remember that young people are just as likely to be victims of crime as they are to become involved in criminal activities.

“Earlier this year I signed a national PCC Youth Charter, pledging to engage positively with young people in Sussex and promote their interests.”

The youth commission is one of three pilot projects taking place across the country. Hampshire PCC Simon Hayes and Leicestershire PCC Sir Clive Loader are also working in partnership with youth commissions.

Applications for the Sussex youth commission close on 20 December.
