Youth justice: Councils pressed for crime figures

The Department for Education and Skills is considering a new performance indicator for local authorities on the number of looked-after children in the criminal justice system.

Children Now has learned that ministers are considering the indicatorfor the forthcoming green paper on looked-after children.

John Fassenfelt, chair of the Magistrates' Association's youth courtscommittee, said the move would be very welcome as the currentperformance indicator and statistics on the issue are not comprehensiveenough.

"One difficulty we have is that magistrates say there is only anecdotalevidence that young people from care are more likely to enter thejustice system. Also the current statistics only measure children whohave been in a care home for more than six weeks and offending behaviourcan be one reason why they change homes," he said.
