It is hoped the forecasting tool will allow the YJB to plan for peaks and troughs in custody, keeping enough beds to deal with demand but not wasting money by providing too many.
According to YJB documents seen by CYP Now, a new forecasting tool was commissioned in May 2009, after the demand for youth custody places fell unexpectedly to around 2,400. Since then there have been continued falls in custody levels.
However numbers have risen in the last couple of months with latest available statistics (for June) showing there were 2,253 children (including 18-year-olds) in youth jails, leaving space for just an extra 141 prior to last month’s riots.
