Numbers of children in custody have fallen back to pre-riot levels after a significant surge in the wake of last year's disturbances, latest statistics have shown.

Figures released by the Ministry of Justice show that in December there were 1,891 children under the age of 18 in the youth secure estate, down 145 (or 7.1 per cent) on November’s figure of 2,036.

It is the first time the level has been below 2,000 since before the riots, with numbers in custody standing at 1,977 in July 2011.

Figures released in parliament last year revealed that on 5 August, the day before rioting in Tottenham began, the number of children in custody stood at 2,104 and fell slightly to 2,094 by 10 August, before remands to custody as a result of the riots took hold.
