Youth club user campaigns against Oldham cuts

A 15-year-old youth centre user from Oldham has set up a petition against council plans to close all the centres across the Lancashire town.

Ben Ryan has launched the Save Our Youth Services Oldham petition against the council’s proposal to decommission its entire integrated youth service, leaving Madlho Youth Zone, operated by OnSide, to deliver activities for young people.

Under the plans, which are currently under consultation, the council will close nine youth centres, saving £600,000, but will continue to pay its annual £400,000 subsidy to the youth zone.

Ben, who uses South Chadderton Youth Centre, has warned that young people will be left disappointed if the plans are approved.

“The impact would be a massive one, not just on me but the whole of the borough,” he said.
