The competition, which is open to children and young people aged between 10 and 18, is designed to remind young Europeans that they have the right to protection under EU law.
Young people have been invited to get together in groups of four or more and design a poster exploring the theme of protection.
Competitions will first be held nationally, and the winners from each country will compete in a final in Brussels in December this year.
Jacques Barrot, vice president of the European Commission, said: Guaranteeing children’s rights and raising awareness of these rights are objectives shared by the EU and its member states.
