Incidents of violence, including serious assaults, were higher than any other prison, inspectors found in May this year. Over a six-month period, more than 30 boys at the Staffordshire facility for young people aged under 18 who have offended, were taken to hospital following attacks. Last year, more than 400 weapons were also found.

Following their latest visit, in September, inspectors “found an institution still struggling to manage behaviour and provide a purposeful regime for children”.

It found that levels of children feeling unsafe “remained similar to the previous inspection”.

While rates of violence were “slightly lower” inspectors found there had been 126 assaults over the previous six months. This is still “too high and higher than other young offender institutions”.
