Young offender institutions revealed as most violent prisons in England

Three young offender institutions (YOI), including Feltham, have been revealed as the most violent prisons in England.

In an answer to a question from Batley and Spen MP Mike Wood, justice minister Crispin Blunt revealed that between October 2009 and September this year there were 641 attacks by young offenders on fellow inmates at Feltham.

This was by a clear margin the largest number of assaults, with 392 incidents reported during the same period at second-placed Wetherby YOI and 389 at Glen Parva YOI.

In contrast, at some of the UK's most well-known adult prisons attacks on inmates are less common, with 148 incidents recorded at Wormwood Scrubs and 35 at Parkhurst.

Blunt said the figures were taken from the National Offender Management Service (Noms) but did not breakdown whether those involved were responsible for multiple incidences.
