
Loughton told CYP Now that the decision to move responsibility for youth policy out of the education department for the first time in its history, “while not unexpected, takes youth work further away from the education system”.
The government announced the decision last week after months of deliberation. Loughton called the timing of the decision “ironic”, given the "huge response" the independent Commission on Youth Work has received lauding the important links between youth work and schools.
“There was speculation that it [youth policy] was going to the Department for Communities and Local Government – the Cabinet Office is a better place for it," he said. "But it comes at a time when the Commission on Youth Work, which I am chairing, is inundated with lots of schools and academies saying they really value the links between youth work and education.”
