Loughton urges Cabinet Office to promote good youth work

Former children's minister Tim Loughton has called on the Cabinet Office to take the lead in highlighting good youth work across the country after a survey by that department revealed youth service spend has slumped by 22 per cent in just two years.

The survey also showed that less than half of authorities always take the Education and Inspections Act 1996 into account when making decisions about which youth services to fund.

Loughton told CYP Now youth services are often neglected because councils continue to view them as a “soft target”.?

“We need to do an audit of exactly what the youth offer is across local authorities and that’s what we tried to do through [the policy paper] Positive for Youth”, he said.?

“There’s a lot of evidence and good research out there and the Cabinet Office has to put a spotlight on local authorities to say where some are doing it and some aren’t."

The government shifted responsibility for youth services to the Cabinet Office one year ago from the Department for Education.
