Loughton voices fears over Whitehall shift

Former children's minister Tim Loughton has added his voice to
concerns that youth work's links to education could be undermined by the
government's decision to move the policy brief to the Cabinet
Office.

Loughton said the decision last month to move responsibility for youth policy out of the education department for the first time in its history, "while not unexpected, takes youth work further away from the education system".

"There was speculation that it (youth policy) was going to the Department for Communities and Local Government - the Cabinet Office is a better place for it," he said. "But it comes at a time when the Commission on Youth Work is inundated with schools and academies saying they value the links between youth work and education."

Youth sector leaders also fear the move will undermine youth work as an educational activity.
