Welsh schools given power to act on school journey behaviour

1 min read Education
Schools and local authorities in Wales have the power to take action against pupils who misbehave on their way to and from school under a code coming into force next year.

The All Wales Travel Behaviour Code, published this week, covers pupils aged five to 19 and all modes of transport, including bus, train, walking and cycling. It aims to promote positive behaviour and improve the safety of pupils travelling to school and college, and gives head teachers a statutory right to take action against pupils even if they are not on school premises.

The government will launch an awareness campaign in January to help headteachers, teachers, parents and transport operators understand their role, and to encourage children and young people to behave responsibly.

Deputy first minister and minister for the economy and transport Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "Close engagement with children and young people has played a very important part in developing the code - their views and opinions have been listened to, and are reflected as such. This code concentrates on positive messages around children and young people's rights, responsibilities and safety when travelling from home to school or college."
