Academics and leaders of youth services from dozens of Commonwealth countries attended the three-day conference held at Reading University from 10-12 July.

Speakers at the conference, titled The Power of Youth Work: Forging a sustainable and peaceful common future, included Jon Ord Professor of youth work at Plymouth Marjon University, Professor Mike Seal from the Professional Association of Lecturers in Youth and Community Work (PALYCW) and Fin Cullen, programme director for education studies, St Mary’s University.

In his presentation, Professor Ord summarised the key features of the UK’s new national youth work curriculum, published earlier this month by the National Youth Agency, highlighting how it creates a framework for what youth workers can learn during their training. He compared the UK approach to the curriculum in Finland which focuses more on giving young people a say on what is taught.
