Text service to improve access to school nurses

2 mins read Education Health
Children will soon be able to book appointments with school nurses by text message or email as part of plans announced by the Department of Health.

The idea is part of a new model for school nursing, which aims to place the service at the heart of healthcare for children and young people.

The Maximising the Contribution of the School Nursing Team guidance sets out a vision for a four-tier model, which aims to make school nurses more visible, more accessible and more central to children’s health care.

It envisages school nurses working with and often co-ordinating the efforts of different agencies to provide public health support to children and young people and to help those with more complex or long-term needs access services they need. In addition, school nurses will be expected to play a greater role in referring children and young people to services when health problems first emerge.
