The UK government announced yesterday (4 August) that all 16- and 17-year-olds in England will be offered the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine within weeks without parental consent.

Teenagers with underlying health conditions and those with vulnerable family members have celebrated the announcement on social media and hit out at critics who started the hashtag #LeaveOurKidsAlone.

One young person wrote on Twitter: “I’m a teenager without underlying health conditions who wants the vaccine. You do not speak for us.”

Another added: “As a 17-year-old, I would love to weigh in. I am vaccinated, I am actually double vaccinated and have been for months because I am a young carer for my disabled, ageing dad. Stop forcing your insecurities on us.”
