Prioritise obese children for Covid-19 vaccine, doctor warns

Obese children should be prioritised for the Covid-19 vaccine amid a rise in overweight young people being admitted to intensive care with the virus, MPs have been told.

Speaking to the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on coronavirus yesterday (10 August), Dr Ruchi Sinha, a paediatric intensivist at Imperial College NHS Trust, said: “We have seen a lot of obese children with Covid-19 that end up in intensive care.”

“I think that we should be offering the vaccine to those children who are vulnerable and likely to suffer,” she added, noting that while some vulnerable children aged 12 and over, including those with disabilities and underlying health conditions, can now be given the jab those classed as obese are not yet eligible.
