Study to find out if playing Wii can tackle obesity

1 min read Education Health
Children from primary schools in Derby are being asked to take part in a study to see if playing Nintendo Wii games can help them lose weight.

Dr Michael Duncan, a senior lecturer in Exercise Physiology at Derby University wants to see if video games can help tackle obesity.

Dr Duncan said: "This study aims to see if young children can lose weight or improve their health by using the Nintendo Wii.

"There is a lot of discussion that video games are bad for your health and we hope this research will determine if playing on this equipment could actually have physical benefits for children."

The trials will take place over a six-week period where half of the school's pupils will play on the Wii game during their lunch hour and half of them will take part in their normal lunch hour activities, whether that is football, socialising or just eating lunch.

Dr Duncan has been awarded £5,000 from the TANITA Healthy Weight Community Trust to carry out the work.
