The In Form project, funded by the European Union's Public Health Programme, will include a pilot summer camp for children from eight countries and a marketing campaign.
The university is working with health, education and community workers and communities in the North west. It wants to recruit children and young people to create their own anti-obesity marketing campaign to target their peers. It will also help to develop a training programme for "obesity trainers" and a guidance manual by gathering information on research findings, policies, and preventative actions.
Vincent O'Brien, principal lecturer in public health at University of Cumbria, said, "This project is truly unique in that part of the awareness campaign will be developed by those we are trying to reach. The aim is to connect with children and teenagers by speaking to them in their own vernacular, and what better way to do that than enlist young people to create the campaign for us?"
