The Youth Justice Board (YJB) has said that due to falling custody levels a decision has been taken to decommission the 202 places it purchases at Stoke Heath YOI near Telford.
John Drew, chief executive of the YJB, said: "A phased withdrawal and relocation of all young people currently placed at the establishment will take place over the next six months.
"The falling numbers of children and young people entering custody has meant the YJB has been able to decommission at Stoke Heath with a full year saving of more than £7m.
"Over the last three years, the Youth Justice Board’s decommissioning plans have delivered an annual saving of over £36m."
